On February 17, 2020, Thailand’s National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) finalized its 5G spectrum auctions in Bangkok, generating 100.52 billion baht (US$3.2 billion). The event drew participation from major mobile operators, including Advanced Info Service, True Move H Universal Communication Plc, CAT Telecom Plc, TOT Plc, and Total Access Communication Plc (DTAC). The NBTC auctioned 48 licenses across three spectrum bands: 700MHz, 2600MHz, and 26GHz.
Advanced Info Service secured the most licenses, winning 23 across all three bands. True Move H Universal Communication Plc acquired 17 licenses, with nine in the 2600MHz band and eight in the 26GHz band.
State-run operators CAT Telecom Plc and TOT Plc, participating in their first auction, together won six licenses. Total Access Communication Plc (DTAC), which only bid on the high-band 26GHz, obtained two licenses. Each license reached a final price of 1.95 billion baht.
Winners of 700MHz and 2600MHz licenses must pay the government over 10 and seven years, respectively. Those winning 26GHz licenses must pay the full amount within 12 months.
NBTC Secretary-General Takorn Tantasith described the auction as a significant milestone in Thailand’s transition to 5G. The regulator expects commercial 5G services to launch later this year, with data speeds up to 100 times faster than 4G networks. Advanced Info Service CEO Somchai Lertsutiwong noted that 5G will enable enhanced mobile broadband, massive machine-type communications, and ultra-reliable low-latency communications.
Industry players welcomed the outcome. True Move H Universal Communication Plc President Saran Phaloprakarn called the auction a milestone for Thailand’s digital infrastructure, adding that his company is committed to investing in 5G rollout and exploring new applications for customers and the economy.
The NBTC has established a regulatory framework covering spectrum allocation, licensing, and network sharing. Takorn Tantasith stated that the framework is designed to promote competition, innovation, and investment, providing a level playing field for all operators, including new entrants. A study by the GSMA projects that 5G will contribute to a 1.2% increase in Thailand’s GDP by 2025. The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) praised the auction, saying it demonstrates Thailand’s commitment to developing its digital economy.
A report by the Asian Development Bank also anticipates that 5G will drive economic growth, improve productivity, and enhance quality of life in the country. With the commercial rollout expected later this year, Thailand is positioned to become a major player in the regional digital economy, supported by industry players, regulators, and international organizations.
