Microsoft Launches Surface Laptop Ultra with Nvidia RTX Spark N1X Chip Starting at $2,599
Launch and Core Specifications
Microsoft has introduced the Surface Laptop Ultra, positioning it as a direct competitor to Apple’s MacBook Pro. The device runs on Nvidia’s RTX Spark N1X chip, available in two configurations: one with a 5,120-core GPU and 18-core CPU, and another with a 6,144-core GPU and 20-core CPU. Memory options range from 24GB to 128GB, while storage is offered in 512GB, 1TB, or 2TB variants. According to Microsoft’s announcement, the laptop can run local AI agents with more than 120 billion parameters, targeting developers and AI creators who require substantial on-device computing power.
Display, Design and Connectivity
The Surface Laptop Ultra features a 15-inch PixelSense Ultra display with a resolution of 3,270×2,180 pixels and a 120Hz refresh rate. It measures 18mm in thickness when closed and weighs 4.5 pounds. The device is available in Platinum and Nightfall color options. For connectivity, it includes three USB-C ports, one USB-A port, an HDMI port, an SD card reader, and a headphone jack. Microsoft has also implemented Magnetic Connect, its version of MagSafe using a USB-C port for power delivery and accessory attachment.
Pricing, Availability and Trade-In Offer
Pre-orders for the Surface Laptop Ultra begin immediately, with the base model starting at $2,599. The most powerful configuration, featuring the 20-core CPU, 6,144-core GPU and 128GB of memory, is priced at $5,899.99. General availability is set for October 16, 2026. As part of the launch, Microsoft offers a $1,000 trade-in bonus for eligible MacBook units, described as a “break up” incentive to encourage switching from Apple’s ecosystem.
Business Performance and Technical Caveats
In a business-focused review, the top-tier Surface Laptop Ultra configuration demonstrated strong multi-threaded CPU performance, winning tests by 30 to 47 percent over competing x64 notebooks. The system’s ability to allocate up to 96GB of memory to the GPU enables a 35B-parameter model to run at 58 to 89 tokens per second. However, the review noted significant power delivery issues during sustained workloads: an all-core OpenBLAS LU solve at N=20000 caused the laptop to shut down three times in one evening due to power cuts, with log evidence pointing to power delivery or firmware protection rather than overheating. Additionally, Windows on Arm was found to limit 4K random I/O to under 300K IOPS under NTFS and BitLocker, approximately half the performance of comparable x64 systems.
Surface RTX Spark Dev Box for Developers
Alongside the laptop, Microsoft launched the Surface RTX Spark Dev Box, a compact desktop unit aimed at developers. It features the same 6,144-core GPU and 20-core CPU as the top laptop configuration, paired with 128GB of unified memory and up to 1 petaflop of AI performance. The Dev Box supports AI models exceeding 120 billion parameters and includes a removable 2TB SSD. It is available for pre-order at $5,999, with shipping scheduled to begin in November 2026. The device measures 12.85×6.77×1.69 inches and weighs 4.4 pounds, offering a portable alternative for AI development workflows.
Battery Life and Power Efficiency
The Surface Laptop Ultra offers up to 12 hours of active web usage or 15 hours of local video playback on a single charge, according to Microsoft’s official specifications. This battery performance is achieved despite the device’s high-performance Nvidia RTX Spark N1X chip and power-hungry AI workloads, thanks to efficient power management and the Arm-based architecture of the Grace CPU. The laptop’s 18mm thickness when closed contributes to thermal and power constraints that were observed during sustained workloads in testing.
During business-focused testing, the device experienced power delivery issues under extreme loads, such as an all-core OpenBLAS LU solve at N=20000, which caused the system to shut down multiple times due to power cuts rather than overheating. These events highlight the challenges of balancing high performance with battery efficiency in a thin-and-light form factor, particularly when pushing the GPU and CPU to their limits for extended periods.
